A kidney transplant survivor has clinched a gold medal after winning his fifth British snooker title.

Derek Wardle (78), of Central Drive, Wingerworth, swept competitors aside to once again be crowned champion at the annual British Transplant Games.

He said: "My potting's not brilliant these days but I think my experience taught me to play safe and not to take on any risky shots and that gave me the edge.

"The main thing is that these games show just what can be achieved after transplant operations and they help highlight the importance of organ donors and fund-raising."

Grandad-of-three Mr Wardle, who used to play snooker for north-east Derbyshire, was struck down with kidney failure and underwent gruelling dialysis before transplant surgery 16 years ago.

But he went on to win the Transplant Sport UK British Transplant Games five times and clinched his fifth gold medal during the latest games, sponsored by Westfield Health, earlier this month in Sheffield.

The retired engineer added: "My kidney transplant changed my life and hopefully these games will give others hope."

Anyone interested in becoming an organ donor or taking part in fund-raising can call the Organ Donor Register on 0845 6060400 or visit the website www.uktransplant.org.uk.
