A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: "He heard a noise downstairs and went to investigate. He found a man in the house who assaulted him and then ran off."

The victim suffered cuts and bruising to his head, face and arms, and was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital for treatment.

A female friend had been in the house with him at the time but was not hurt during the incident.
