North Wingfield Church choir was where Harry Hopkinson — who later went on to tour the world as music hall star Harry Torrani, the Yodelling Cowboy from Chesterfield, — shot into the spotlight as a boy soprano.

His talent as a singer was discovered by the church organist Herbert Butterworth.
And Mr Butterworth is on this photograph of the choir taken in 1928 and sent in to us by Ken Hoult, from Ecclesall in Sheffield. His father, Reginald Victor, was in the choir then.
He names some of those on the photograph as:
Back row (left to right): Jack Bestwick, — —, — —, — —, Roy Annable, — —, — —.
Second row: Mr Tarlton (church warden), Tommy Lane (server), — —, Mr Ewing, Mr Hoult (Ken's father), Mr Rose, Mr Chapman, Len White, Mr Risley (church warden).
Third row: — — (organ blower?), Mr Lee, Mr Butterworth (organist), Rev J. F. Worsley Boden, — — (rector/lay reader?), Mr Cotton and Mr Holmes.
Front row: E. Frakes, West brothers, — —, Wheelhouse and H. Holmes, son of Mr Holmes.
If you can fill in the missing names please write to us at Memory Lane.
