SIR — With reference to "My dad played for this team" (Mailbox, March 6), Tony Stevenson thinks the photo is from the late 30s. I think it is from the late 40s/early 50s.
The referee in the photo is my father, Ellis Burrows of Duckmanton, who started refereeing in 1947 after being forced to stop playing for Markham Sports due a leg injury.
He then went on to be linesman in the 1960 FA Charity Shield and in 1969 was linesman in two Fairs Cup matches in Ireland and Germany.
His career culminated in 1970 as linesman in the Football League Cup final between Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion, which City won after extra time.
After his retirement from the Football League he then continued to serve on Derbyshire FA committees and was presented with a medal for 50 years of service to football in 1998.

*Mr Burrows' daughter Valerie Bassett, of Amber Crescent, Walton, adds that her father died in 2001.
