Dambusters' place in history

Derbyshire's dams earned a place in history when the famous Dambusters practised flying low over water in the Peaks.
That was back in 1943 prior to 617 Squadron's attack with the bouncing bombs – invented by Ripley-born Barnes Wallis — on dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley during the Second World War.

And special anniversary flights by a single Lancaster bomber over the Derwent dam have proved big crowd pullers as can be seen from the picture above taken in 1993
